The Merchants of Bollywood

Bollywood spectacular The Merchants of Bollywood is coming to six Polish cities this year, including Warsaw's Kongresowa Hall Dec. 15-16. The Times theater critic described the show as a "hot, high-octane pleasure to warm the coldest winter night."

The Merchants of Bollywood is based on the true story of the Merchant family and deals with the intergenerational conflict between Shantilal Merchant and his granddaughter Ayesha. Shantilal is the last in a long line of guardians of Kathak, a classical dance tradition from northern India. Ayesha leaves her native Rajasthan for Mumbai to choreograph a modern Bollywood extravaganza in defiance of his wishes. What follows is an emotional rollercoaster where romance, high drama, humor, tension, jealousy, friendship and enmity are all woven into the plot in the time-honored tradition of Indian blockbusters.

Not a scintilla of Bollywood verve has been spared on the costumes or the stage design. Dozens of actors and dancers take the stage to the music of brothers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant, who pit some of Bollywood's catchiest hit tunes against traditional Indian rhythms. The Merchants of Bollywood was choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, one of India's most famous dancers, on whose personal history the musical is based.
