Russia's Patriarchal Orthodox Choir will be performing at Warsaw's Kongresowa Hall Dec. 11. The choir was formed in 1998 with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II and has gone on to become the leading choral group of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The choir was founded by Prof. Nikolai Georgyevsky, who served as conductor until 2004. The current conductor, Ilya Tolkachev, learned and honed his conducting skills at the feet of the greatest conductors of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The choir numbers some 40 singers, most of whom have received a higher musical education. The main role of the Patriarchal Orthodox Choir is to participate in church services officiated by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. The choir accompanies him on his many journeys around Russia and abroad. They also sing during religious services held at the Cathedral of the Dormition at the Kremlin in Moscow.

The choir's repertoire mostly comprises songs from the Moscow Liturgical Songbook and religious masterworks by Russian composers.
