Write For Rights, Amnesty Urges
December 2, 2009
Article's tools:

Campaign group Amnesty International Poland is holding an annual 24-hour "write-a-thon" letter-writing marathon Dec. 12-13 to mark International Human Rights Day.

Each year, people around the world come together during the event to demand that the rights of individuals are protected and to show solidarity with victims of abuses.

The idea of a 24-hour "write-a-thon" came from Amnesty International Poland activists in 2001 and has become popular in many countries. People write letters for 24 hours and send them to the authorities. They call for human rights defenders to be protected, and for prisoners of conscience to be released. They challenge injustice and demand accountability. Last year 78,843 letters were written in Poland and almost 295,000 around the world, according to Amnesty.

This year, Amnesty International is calling for action on behalf of people facing human rights abuses in Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece, Nepal, the occupied Palestinian Territories, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

This year's write-a-thon in Warsaw is taking place at 25 Ch³odna St. and in the Dramatyczny Theater at the Palace of Culture, from noon, Dec. 12 to noon, Dec. 13. The event is open to everyone.

"Every letter... will help to put pressure on governments and international organizations that are failing to stop human rights abuses and can help people get their voices heard," according to Amnesty.
