High School Musical in Warsaw
December 16, 2009    wersja polska »
Article's tools:

If you do not know who Gabriella Montez or Troy Bolton are then you are almost certainly not a teenager besotted by the American TV film High School Musical. But there is still hope for those of us whose teenage angst is but a distant memory and whose walls are bare of Vanessa Hudgens (Gabriella) and Zac Efron (Troy) posters. The show has gone live and it has gone Polish and it is coming to Warsaw's Kongresowa Hall as High School Musical on Stage! Jan. 14.

The original TV version of the exploits of the American students of East High became a worldwide hit. High School Musical has so far spawned two sequels (with a third in the pipeline) and a feature film. The main cast of HSM continue to be the everyday idols of millions of teenagers-and a cushy cash cow for the Disney empire.

High School Musical: The Concert, High School Musical: The Ice Tour, and High School Musical on Stage! are all spin-offs of the original TV film.

The Gliwice Musical Theater in the southern Silesia region took on the challenge of preparing the Polish version of High School Musical. The performance was staged by Tomasz Dutkiewicz, director of Warsaw's Komedia Theater, and choreographed by Sylwia Adamowicz.

Selecting the main performers from the 1,300-odd hopefuls who turned up took no end of auditions. The stage production is a faithful adaptation of the film. All the greatest hits of the original are there with Polish lyrics by Jacek Mikołajczyk.

The Polish version of High School Musical on Stage! premiered in September to enthusiastic reviews.

As Piotr Sarzyński wrote in weekly news magazine Polityka, "It works-largely due to the fantastic group of young actors that were selected at the auditions …. They dance brilliantly, evince astonishing acting skills, and generally sing well. But most of all, they exude such great, natural, positive energy that even the most chary of viewers will sooner or later succumb to the plot and the production's truly Shakespearean dilemma of whether to play basketball or sing in a school musical."
