Gospel Tribute to King of Pop
The Harlem Gospel Choir is coming to Warsaw's Kongresowa Hall Dec. 20. They are no strangers to Poland, having appeared with the vocalists Natalia Kukulska and Mietek Szcześniak as well as the band Sistars.
The choir was founded in 1986 by R&B manager and producer Allen Bailey. Bailey had previously worked with Lionel Richie and the Commodores, Prince and Michael Jackson. The choir gave their first public performance at Yankee Stadium, NYC, in 1990 for Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid activist who went on to become president of South Africa.
The choir's repertoire consists of gospel standards, modern R&B, and some of their own compositions. They love to accompany famous vocalists and groups on stage and have appeared with Diana Ross, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Razorlight and the virtual band Gorillaz.
This year's concert tour is dedicated to the memory of Michael Jackson. The Kongresowa is set to reverberate to gospel arrangements of Jackson's greatest hits, including "Thriller," "Dangerous," "Smooth Criminal" and "We Are the World." But traditional and modern gospel, jazz and blues numbers made famous by such luminaries as Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder will be in plentiful supply as well.
