Polish officials Jan. 5 revealed that a Russian spy had been arrested in Poland at the beginning of February last year. When apprehended, the spy had communications equipment on him, officials said.

Warsaw prosecutors confirmed they are investigating "a man suspected of espionage." The investigation is classified as top secret. The prosecutors said the charge sheet will be submitted to court in the coming weeks.

The arrested man is a Russian national and a longtime affiliate of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). An excellent speaker of Polish, he has lived in Poland for over a decade. Before he was arrested, he managed a small company trading in telescopic sights for shotguns, which was his cover for espionage work focusing on military and energy affairs, Polish media reported.

The case marks another major scandal involving a Russian spy in Poland. The biggest Russian intelligence scandal in Poland's recent history was the case of Polish interior ministry officer Maj. Marek Zieliński, who worked for the military intelligence services of the former Soviet Union and then Russia in 1981-93. Zieliński was arrested and sentenced to nine years in prison in 1994.
