In a tradition that originated in 14th-century England, Feb. 14 is a day when love and romance is celebrated. On that day people around the world send gifts to their sweethearts.

Surprisingly enough, St. Valentine, the patron saint of couples in love, originally a Roman martyr, used to be synonymous with the devil in 16th-century Poland. St. Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, was considered to be an unlucky day in Germany. Valentine was the patron saint of epileptics, a tradition that later spread to Poland. The Church regarded epileptics as possessed and recommended exorcism for them, and St. Valentine got a bad name. Nowadays, his name has more positive connotations.

What should you do to make Feb. 14 a special day for you and your sweetheart? To begin with, take care of the Valentine card. It is a perfect opportunity for shy people to send an anonymous love card to say how they feel. It is also a good excuse to buy the one you love something special, amusing or exclusive.

According to marketing experts, Valentine's Day is a good time to buy a gift to anyone you love, not necessarily your partner. It could be your mother or your daughter, who is dreaming of her first perfume. Not much time is left to Valentine's Day and so online shopping could be a good idea.

At http://e-shop.fafarafa.pl, you can find a small pink pillow called Big Mouth (zl.109). This cuddly toy is made of felt and terry fabric and filled with polyester. It can be hand-washed. It has a CE certificate and is unsuitable for children under three.

At www.crazyshop.pl you can buy a Heart Rainbow Generator (zl.129). Powered with sunlight, it does not require any batteries and all it needs to work is a sunny day. You mount it on a window pain with a sucker, its solar panel accumulates natural energy and then an authentic Svarowski crystal will refract light to produce beautiful bits of rainbow specially for you.

If love is nothing but a disappointment to you, get yourself the Voodoo Ex Lover Doll (zl.25) from http://studiomomo.pl, complete with 10 pins. If you want to take revenge on your ex, just stick a pin in them. Ouch!

The Resisabelica studio specializes in handmade gifts. For Valentine's Day, it recommends long (6 cm), delicate earrings that make the neck look slimmer. Each earring is made of two hearts dangling from a thin bar. The upper, red heart is made of Millefiori glass and the one below is made of black hematite, which is said to facilitate contact with nature. This subtle composition combines the passion of red with the cool calculation of black. Another recommendable item is a pair of silver earrings with a large (2.4 x 2.4 cm) heart of coral, a mineral believed to soothe emotions, restore harmony and stimulate love. Its wonderful red color will warm up and give life to every outfit and it looks good on all kinds of complexions. In these earrings, the large heart heats up a tiny, metal heart that cannot exist without the bigger one. Links between the two hearts are made of glass beads. The hooks are open and made of silver. The whole is around 5 cm in length. Price: zl.100.

If you are a more traditional, try perfume from Carolina Herrera who designed 212, her first fragrance, in 1997. Then came a version for men, 212 Men, followed by Chic in 2002, Carolina in 2003, and Chic for Men in 2004. The fragrances are priced zl.343 for 100 cc, zl.280 for 60 cc, and zl.183 for 30 cc.

Make sure to put your Valentine gift in attractive packaging. Prepare a delicious dinner, light candles and make the moment special. Every Valentine's Day is the only one of its kind and will never happen again.
