Twenty years ago, many people in Poland could not hope to get a phone line installed at home because the country's telecommunications network had more holes in it than a leaky sieve. By the time the system developed enough to match average European standards, most Poles already had a phone-a cell phone.

Backwardness can be an asset. The race for development forces us to skip certain stages of technological evolution. Otherwise we would have to forget about catching up with the best and get used to seeing the backs of our more enterprising rivals.

Twenty-one years ago, The Warsaw Voice opened for business and in many ways took the lead technologically and professionally. For example, we were never printed using traditional technology-manual typesetting was eschewed in favor of desktop publishing.

We joined an American electronic news distribution network as soon as was possible. We hit the internet as soon as it became available in Poland.

Today we are taking the next step. We are launching The Warsaw Voice Multimedia Platform, in the belief that contemporary readers have such an extensive need for information that this can only be satisfied by a broad and technically diverse range of media. The new platform includes The Warsaw Voice Magazine, The Warsaw Voice Online, The Warsaw Voice Daily, and The Warsaw Voice Weekly Updates. Individual components of the platform, including a new website and an electronic daily, will be launched in stages over the course of this year.

The Warsaw Voice Magazine which you are now reading is the successor of The Warsaw Voice weekly. It will be published once a month as a classic albeit modern magazine. Reporting on trends, events and people, publishing interviews, reports, analyses and opinions, we will never depart from the principles we have followed since the first issue of The Warsaw Voice was published on Oct. 23, 1988. These include credibility, independence and objectivity.

At the end of March, a revamped version of our website, www.warsawvoice.pl, will be launched, offering new communication tools and expanded multimedia news sections.

The development of successive stages of The Warsaw Voice Multimedia Platform will involve ever-growing user and reader involvement. The project will be carried out in the second and third quarters of this year.

I hope our new services strengthen the bond we have with our readers and help us expand our audience. I also hope The Warsaw Voice Multimedia Platform wins the respect of advertisers as they work to achieve their business goals in Poland and around the world with our help.
