This year the University of Economics and Computer Science (Wyższa Szkoła Ekonomiczno-Informatyczna) in Warsaw, one of the oldest private universities in Poland, is celebrating the15th anniversary of its foundation. "It hasn?t always been milk and honey. Creating a good school is far from easy," says Prof. Paweł Bożyk, the rector of the university.
A fundamental factor that determines the quality of education and research at the university is its international collaboration with universities and educational organizations across the world, including Germany, France, Turkey, Denmark and Austria. Under the Students of the World program, more than 150 international students from 10 countries study at UECS. Soon they will be joined by classmates from countries such as China, Nigeria, India, Thailand and Malaysia.
Today it is obvious that higher education institutions must provide an excellent language education if their graduates are to develop a successful career. Recognizing that fact, UECS has established its own language preparatory school and examination center, which, after supplying a year's worth of intensive classes, tests students? ability through TOEFL, FCE and similar examinations
Later this year, UECS will start a pioneer program called Cooperative Education (CO-OP) based on, as the name suggests, cooperation with big-name companies to update the course content, provide internships and focus on teaching real-life skills to students. The Business Center Club and the European Economic and Social Committee (Europejski Komitet Ekonomiczno-Społeczny) have chosen UECS as the recipient of this year's European Medal in recognition of such innovative initiatives.
