Music, Emotion and the Photographer
April 7, 2010
Article's tools:

The Kordegarda Gallery March 30 opened an exhibition of photography by Dominik Skurzak. The photos were taken during the first two months of the Year of Chopin.
This is not an exhibition for those who expect a modern take on art or bold artistic quests that will stir discussions on the limits and meaning of contemporary photography. Skurzak tackles the simple theme of pianists in concert, photographing them with a straightforward attitude skillfully balanced by a delicate air of beauty and contemplation that pervades the pictures.
The 21 large-format photographs, most of them black-and-white, are moments in time captured during emotional piano concerts, together forming the photographer's tribute to music.
Skurzak has specialized in taking pictures of classical music performances for 10 years. A musician by training, Skurzak has a way of spotting the best moment to release the shutter during a performance. When he works with the camera, as important as the eye is the inner sense of music which Skurzak seems to "breathe" just as the pianist does. He focuses on the emotions on stage and on the artists' faces. Skurzak's photographs of performers such as Lang Lang, Yundi, Kevin Kenner, Evgeny Kissin, and Daniel Barenboim speak volumes about the emotions driving these musicians.
