Among the top Polish officials and politicians who died when the presidential plane crashed in Smolensk, Russia, on April 10, were:

Lech Aleksander Kaczyński, President of Poland from 2005. Born June 18, 1949 in Warsaw. Head of the central auditing office (NIK) 1992-1995. Justice minister in Jerzy Buzek's government 2000-2001. Mayor of Warsaw 2002-2005, co-founder of the Law and Justice (PiS) party. Served as a senator and deputy. Postdoctoral degree in law, associate professor at the University of Gdańsk and the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University. Specialist in labor law.

Maria Kaczyńska, Poland's First Lady. Born 1943. Married Lech Kaczyński in 1978. Gave birth to daughter, Marta, in 1980. Patron of various charity organizations.

General Franciszek G±gor, chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army. Graduated from the Tadeusz Ko¶ciuszko Land Forces Military Academy in Wrocław in 1973. Served as Poland's military representative to NATO and the EU. Survived by wife and two children.

Sławomir Stanisław Skrzypek, governor of the National Bank of Poland from 2007. Born 1963. Engineer, economist. Survived by wife and three children.

Władysław Stasiak, head of the President's Office. Born 1966. Civil servant, active in national and local government. Interior minister in Jarosław Kaczyński's government. Former head of the National Security Bureau (BBN).

Aleksander Szczygło, head of the National Security Bureau (BBN). Former defense minister. Member of the Law and Justice (PiS) party. First elected to parliament in 2001 and then in 2005 and 2007. Graduated from the University of Gdańsk in 1990 with a law degree.

Jerzy Szmajdziński, deputy parliamentary Speaker. The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) party's candidate for this fall's presidential elections. Defense minister 2001-2005. Deputy since 1990. Survived by wife and two children.

Jolanta Dorota Szymanek-Deresz, Member of parliament, lawyer. Born 1954. Headed the President's Office when Aleksander Kwa¶niewski was head of state.

Paweł Wypych, Secretary of State in the President's Office. Born 1968, active in local government. Scout leader. Former deputy labor minister and president of the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS).
