A total of 140 companies received European Medals for Services at an awards ceremony at the Olympic Center in Warsaw March 19 in the 20th round of a promotional program that began in the fall of 2000.

Former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski and ex-Prime Minister Leszek Miller (pictured below) were awarded European Medals of Honor for promoting the idea of European integration and contributing to Poland’s European Union membership.

The European Medal is a non-commercial, nationwide project aimed at supporting Polish products and services on EU markets and promoting the idea of European integration among the business community. The medals go to products and services that meet European standards and are officially recommended by the Office of the Committee for European Integration (UKIE), the Business Centre Club, and the European Economic and Social Committee, one of the most important business institutions in the EU.

European Medals were first given out 10 years ago, and since then award-winning companies have included leading Polish manufacturers, banks, financial and insurance institutions, construction sector leaders, IT and telecommunications companies as well as smaller businesses from local markets, universities and even media outlets.

Since the fall of 2000, European Medals have been handed out every six months, alternately for products and services. A service or product nominated for the award has to meet specific legal standards and have all the appropriate licenses and patents. Also important is how fast the company has been developing and if it has received any other prizes or certificates. The judges also evaluate whether and how a given company uses the opportunities stemming from Poland’s European Union membership—whether it takes advantage of training courses, seminars on the European economy, legal consultations and analyses, market research and so on. A company whose product or service wins an award receives a special certificate and a medal made of bronze.
To date, more than 3,000 European Medals have been given out to products and services.
