Pill-Free Treatment
April 30, 2010
Article's tools:

Zbigniew Piotrowicz, chairman of the board and director-general of Uzdrowisko Lądek-Długopole SA health-resort company, talks to Barbara Deręgowska about medicinal treatments and other attractions available in the spas of Lądek and Długopole.

You run two health resorts which are over 20 kilometers apart. That is quite a special arrangement. What else is special about the resorts?
These are two health resorts but one company. The uniqueness of Lądek, Poland’s oldest health resort with a tradition spanning 800 years, and Długopole, the smallest and youngest resort in the Kłodzko Valley, is that they are located in natural surroundings. This distinguishes them from other spas in the valley, such as Kudowa and Polanica, where the spa facilities are right next to the respective towns. In our case, these are completely separate places, and in addition Lądek has a beautiful location. At 500 meters above sea level, surrounded by the Złote (Golden) Hills and healthy forests with multiple hiking routes, this is a very attractive area for tourism, romantic and at times even wild. This enhances the curative aspects of the health resorts and the spa atmosphere. Długopole, the smallest and youngest spa in the valley, is similar, with its own special microclimate and waters with unique curative properties for treating digestive problems and blood diseases. Lądek, on the other hand, has radon and sulfide-fluoride mineral waters that are used in treating orthopedic ailments, skin diseases and problems related to menopause. Lądek’s radon mineral deposit is the only one in Poland and one of three in the world with such a high concentration. Bathing in these waters is very good for rebuilding tissue damaged after injuries and surgery. Lądek has good development prospects thanks to its thermal water deposits that have yet to be utilized.

How much interest do the health spas attract? Do people still believe in such “pill-free” treatments?
Every year we have about 25,000 guests, and many of them return over and over. That’s probably the best proof that spa treatments are effective, needed and make sense. Foreigners also visit us, mainly from other countries in Europe. As always, the greatest number come from Germany, but we also get the odd guest from Britain, Sweden, Norway and France. Lately there have been quite a few clients from the east. We are well prepared for playing host to demanding guests. In particular, we recommend luxury rooms in the freshly refurbished historical Wojciech building, with original architecture, a facility offering natural treatments also to people with allergies and disabled clients. We hope to attract guests coming to Wrocław for the Euro 2012 soccer tournament.
