Metro Still Pulling Them In
April 30, 2010
Article's tools:

Warsaw’s Studio Buffo musical theater is putting on Poland’s most popular musical, Metro, in May. This Polish and worldwide phenomenon has been running since 1991 and has gone on to become a theatrical sensation. More than 1.5 million people have already seen Metro, which has been playing to packed houses for 19 years. The musical, written and directed by Janusz Józefowicz with music by Janusz Stokłosa, has launched many Polish stage names, including Edyta Górniak and Natasza Urbańska.

Metro was Poland’s first postwar private theatrical production. It had its world premiere at Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater Jan. 30, 1991 and the Minskoff Theater on Broadway put on 40 performances starting in April 1992. Metro has also been performed more than 200 times in Russia and France. The Studio Buffo musical theater has been running the show since 1997.

The musical tells the story of young, talented artists who get drawn into show business after putting on a performance for passengers at a subway station.
