Poland's energy market regulator (URE) has turned down a request by gas giant PGNiG to increase the gas tariff.

"I refused to approve the motion for a tariff correction for PGNiG for this year," URE chief Marek Woszczyk told the PAP news agency.

"The company has a legal option of filing a new motion or appealing against my decision," Woszczyk added. "I would expect that a potential new motion would include lower price hike expectations."

PGNiG filed a motion to hike gas prices in June.
