Garrigues Named International Law Firm of the Year
August 2, 2010
Article's tools:

Spanish law firm Garrigues, which entered Poland in 2007, has been named International Law Firm of the Year in an annual competition by British legal magazine The Lawyer.

Garrigues is the first law firm from a non-English speaking country to win the award since the competition was launched five years ago. Garrigues competed for the title with five giant law firms from the United States: Weil Gotshal & Manges, Paul Hastings, Hogan Lovells, Debevoise & Plimpton and Quinn Emanuel. Weil Gotshal & Manges came second in the competition and Paul Hastings third.

A total of 1,500 lawyers entered the competition. The winners were picked in a selection process involving hundreds of interviews with industry experts. Garrigues won the award in recognition of its impressive expansion in Latin America, its strategic vision and the scale of international transactions the firm conducted last year. Garrigues’ success proves that continental European law firms are gaining in importance and are becoming strong rivals for law firms from English-speaking countries.

Garrigues, set up in 1941, has been the largest law firm in the Iberian Peninsula for years. Garrigues has offices in Brussels, New York, London, Casablanca, Shanghai, Lisbon, Puerto Rico, Bucharest and since 2007 in Warsaw. The Garrigues Polish office deals with issues concerning real estate, labor law, competition and consumer law, infrastructure and EU subsidies, renewable energy, investment project financing, public-private partnership and debt restructuring.
