There will be 57 exceptional concerts at which more than 2,000 artists will perform works by baroque, classical and romantic masters. This year’s festival is special due to the fact that we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth.

Among invited artists are world-renowned stars such as Martha Argerich, Marc Minkowski, Mischa Maisky, Alexander Gavrylyuk, Ian Hobson, The King’s Singers, Benjamin Grosvenor, Akiko Ebi, Lenneke Ruiten, Rudolf Jansen, Joshua Bell, Philippe Giusiano, Jon Nakamatsu, Nikolai Lugansky, Russian National Orchestra, Mikhail Pletnev, Denis Matsuev, Fou Ts’ong, Howard Shelley, Dang Thai Son, Christian Zacharias, Dina Yoffe, Frans Brüggen and 18th Century Orchestra, Stanisław Bunin, Nelson Freire, Maria João Pires, Nelson Goerner, Philippe Herreweghe from Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, Il Giardino Armonico, and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.

Summer at Zachęta
The Zachęta National Gallery of Art (pictured) is a major high profile state-run art gallery in Warsaw. It is named after Zachęta, the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, founded in 1860, disbanded in 1940 and reestablished in 1990. On Dec. 16, 1922, Gabriel Narutowicz, the first president of Poland was assassinated at Zachęta, five days after taking office. He was shot by a Polish painter named Eligiusz Niewiadomski.
Zachęta is a member of the WDA. It has a program of exhibitions and artistic activities throughout the summer months. This year, one can enjoy the following exhibitions: Jan Lebenstein: Seal of Eros and Thanatos. Paris, 1960’s; Rajmund Ziemski: Landscape 1953-2005; Eva Weinmayr: I Wonder What the Silence Was About.

Another interesting exhibition, The Summer of Youth—Young People in Contemporary Art, includes a special program for children, “Summer in the City.” It is aimed at children who are spending their vacations in the city. Works from the Gallery’s collection include paintings, sculptures and videos related to city and vacation topics. Also, exhibition halls are transformed into “an educational playground” where games for children are inspired by the works of the artists exhibited. More at www.zacheta.art.pl
