Get ready for a heady mix of classic rock, metal, free jazz, funk and hip hop that will leave you reeling. Living Colour are coming back to town to play the Proxima Club Aug. 19.

Living Colour was set up in New York City in 1984 by a group of Afro-American musicians. Their first album, Vivid, came out in 1988. The track “Cult of Personality,” promoted by MTV, made the band famous and earned it a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1989.

The group maintained and consolidated their position with their second album Time’s Up (1990). They then appeared at the inaugural Lollapalooza festival in 1991. Their third album, Stain, was recorded in 1993.

Living Colour broke up over personal differences while working on their fourth album in 1995 and the individual members went solo for nearly six years. They got back together at a concert in 2001 and finally finished their fourth studio album, CollideOscope, in 2003. A year later, Living Colour took part in the Experience Hendrix Tour, an annual series of concerts where rock music legends perform in honor of guitar great Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970).

Living Colour’s latest album, The Chair in the Doorway, was released at the end of 2009. The band is presently working on new material.
