Broadcast fees may go to extremes with new law

Poland could increase broadcast fees charged to media and telecom companies as much as two hundred-fold under the terms of the new telecom law now being forged.

The bill is designed to make the fee structure more transparent by making it independent of the technology used, but the maximum fee levels written into the bill are astronomical compared to prior levels.

Industry leaders claim it could constitute an attack on free press if the government is allowed to arbitrarily change fees in so drastic a manner.
