The Mayan Fashion exhibition at Warsaw’s State Archaeological Museum is a rare opportunity to transport yourself into the world of the Mayas, presenting as it does their esthetic and ideal of beauty. The exhibition features masterly figural works that illustrate the customs of the royal court of the Maya civilization as it was on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, before the Spanish arrived in the early 16th century. Arts and crafts, weaving, and calligraphy are on display, as is decoration using feathers, shells and gemstones. Mayan inspiration in modern art is revealed as well.

The patterns on Mayan costumes have informed the collections of many a contemporary fashion designer. Such patterns can be observed on clay figurines, made in specialist craft workshops, that were buried with the Mayan dead. Each figure had its own individual features and was often a likeness of the deceased.

The exhibits are presented as a multimedia fashion show and there is even a special multimedia display for children that lets them dress personages from the Mayan royal court. There are also competitions with prizes, archaeological workshops, concerts, documentary screenings, talks, and opportunities to meet scholars specializing in ancient Central American civilizations.
