Black Metal From Norway

Norwegian black metal group Dimmu Borgir will be playing the Progresja Club in Warsaw Oct. 7 as part of their Darkness Reborn Tour to promote their latest, ninth, album Abrahadabra.

Dimmu Borgir was formed by five Oslo musicians in 1993. The current lineup, having survived no end of comings and goings, comprises Stian “Shagrath” Thoresen, Sven “Silenoz” Atle Kopperud and Thomas “Galder” Rune Andersen. The group takes its name from Iceland’s Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) volcanic region which, according to legend, is the gateway to hell.

The release of Spiritual Black Dimensions in 1999 was a watershed and served notice that Dimmu Borgir were a force to be reckoned with. The keyboards were accentuated to give a more accessible, melodic sound. The next album, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (2001), was recorded with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and opened up another chapter in the history of the band by steering them toward symphonic black metal. The trend continues on Abrahadabra, which has the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Schola Cantorum choir sitting in.
Two other Norwegian bands are accompanying Dimmu Borgir on their current European tour. Enslaved play a brand of extreme avant-garde metal while Sahg mix elements of doom metal and hard rock.
