Prof. Jerzy Kopel, rector: When our university was launched all those years ago, it was the first private university in Sosnowiec and the second in the Zagłębie area. Every pioneering project is a challenge, and this case was no different. Today the school’s scientific and educational achievements are probably the best testimony to our work.

We are motivated by the awareness of the impact that education has on the future professional lives of students. An effective and comprehensive education is one of the most important challenges of our times. In the social and economic reality around us, knowledge is one of the greatest values. Analysts and researchers of globalization processes are right to mention a knowledge-based economy and a learning society as the characteristic features of today’s world. Being aware of the role of education, for 13 years now we have been providing an education of the highest standard, guaranteeing our students all-round intellectual development and opportunities to take part in classes taught by leading scientists and practitioners. This goal is served not just by classes, lectures, language courses and seminars, but also by scientific conferences organized by the WSH and lectures under the Humanitas program. Scientists, politicians, cultural leaders and media personalities are invited to these events to share their knowledge and experience, teach young people about humanistic values, stimulate their curiosity about the world and offer their thoughts on the most important problems of our times.

It is worth remembering, however, that for a university to fulfill its mission properly, it not only has to guarantee its students a high standard of teaching and give them opportunities for comprehensive intellectual and cultural development; it also has to build proper relations with its social environment. A university—whether public or private—is a public institution fulfilling its tasks for the common good. It cannot focus exclusively on teaching or research in an internal aspect; it should constitute an intellectual hub for the local or regional community of which it is part, be its lasting and fully identifiable component.

Humanitas University does its best to fulfill this mission. Since its inception in 1997, the school has been developing continually, while also supporting the local community. It works actively for the benefit of the city of Sosnowiec and the Zagłębie area, promoting the region at home and abroad, carrying out research projects addressing the needs of the local community, organizing and supporting valuable cultural and educational projects designed for the academic, school and business communities in Sosnowiec. The university sponsors local athletes, artists, and talented junior and senior high school students.

The WSH and its academics have conducted sociological studies of the local labor market in Sosnowiec for many years, monitoring the situation of secondary school graduates, diagnosing social problems and working on methods to deal with these problems. The university’s consistent efforts in these fields have produced tangible results: the results of research conducted at the WSH are later used by local government institutions, nongovernmental organizations and educational institutions. There are few public institutions in Sosnowiec that work so actively and comprehensively for the development of their city and region, that are so committed to scientific, cultural and social initiatives aimed at meeting the needs of the local community. For the WSH, supporting Sosnowiec’s development is a part of its mission and operating philosophy.
