Swedish Symphonic Metal
October 29, 2010
Article's tools:

Swedish symphonic metal band Therion are coming to Warsaw to play the Stodoła club Nov. 29.

The group was formed in 1987 by Christofer Johnsson and was initially known as Blitzkrieg and then Megatherion (inspired by the Celtic Frost band’s album To Mega Therion).

Its first two albums Of Darkness (1991) and the follow-up, Beyond Sanctorum (1992), were typical death metal fare. Prior to recording their third album, the group changed its line-up, leaving only Johnsson of the original members. Therion started experimenting with their sound. The Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas album from 1993 and Lepaca Kliffoth released two years later contained a blend of metal with opera, classical music and progressive rock. Therion’s style started being referred to as symphonic opera metal, but their music also featured the sounds of progressive rock from the 1970s, 1980s heavy metal, oriental music and a lot of other influences. Recording sessions for subsequent albums involved a symphony orchestra, a choir along with instruments such as the balalaika, mandolin and clavichord.

Their current tour is promoting Therion’s 14th album, Sitra Ahra, released in September this year.
