Online Insight Into Chopin
November 30, 2010
Article's tools:

“Chopiniana” is an online project featuring Chopin documents drawn from the State Archives in Warsaw. “Chopiniana” marks the bicentennial of the birth of Frederic Chopin and should be of interest to anyone out to deepen their knowledge of the life and work of this musical genius.

This electronic exhibition, which can be viewed at www.warszawa.ap.gov.pl/chopiniana, shows selected documents from the State Archives in Warsaw and from branches in other cities that have joined forces to help showcase the great Polish pianist and composer.

The exhibition is made up of six sections and has more than 120 photographs, legal documents, maps, press cuttings, posters and handbills. The first section includes typographic sheets as well as the title deeds of Chopin’s birthplace, Żelazowa Wola. The other sections have views of old Warsaw, blueprints for the first statues of Chopin, letters establishing new institutions and Chopin associations, and articles and informational brochures.

Documents detailing the centennial celebrations of Chopin’s birth will prove especially interesting during these bicentennial celebrations, as will pre-war programs and posters for the Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition.

Rare materials shown for the first time comprise a significant part of the exhibition. These are of special historical value.

The exhibition was set up by Marek Wojtylak, who manages the Łowicz branch of the State Archives in Warsaw.
