The first American Film Festival in Poland took place in Wroc³aw Oct. 20-24. This is the only review of American cinema in Poland. The only other such festival in Europe is that in Deauville, France.

The Wroc³aw festival featured 96 movies, including 50 new titles of which 46 were shown for the first time in Poland. The festival was divided into six sections, with titles ranging from such classics as Casablanca and Gone With the Wind to brand new productions entitled The People vs. George Lucas and Ride, Rise, Roar.

The festival’s best feature film award went to Winter’s Bone directed by Debra Granik and the best documentary award to Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist for The Two Escobars.

Audiences saw a full retrospective of movies directed by John Cassavetes, including his most well-known titles, Faces and A Woman Under the Influence.
