Buffo Goes Balkan

The Studio Buffo Theater is staging a Balkan Evening, a concert of hot, fiery music that should go some way to taking the chill off those freezing January nights. Come along on a musical journey through the various countries of south-eastern Europe whose gallimaufry of styles and traditions comprises a veritable cultural melting pot.Traumatized by the events that took place there in the 1990s, the region can be unsettling but, at the same time, appealing with its mixture of brutality and subtlety. The Balkan Evening, directed by Janusz Józefowicz, creates an atmosphere all its own with a red hot vibe. Due credit, too, to Marek Chowaniec’s scenery, Anna Zeman’s costumes, and the glass of red Balkan wine.

Brace yourself for hits like Vladimir Graic’s “Molitva,” with which Marija Serifovic from Serbia won the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, Toni Mavridis’s “Opa Opa,” which Greek band Antique performed at the 2001 song contest, composer Goran Bregovic’s “Tabakiera” and “Kalasnjikov” (Kalashnikov), as well as works by renowned Greek composers Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hatzidakis, and Moldovan composer Dan Balan.

All this is performed by top-notch Buffo artists, including Natasza Urbańska, Monika Ambroziak, Natalia Kujawa, with Janusz Stokłosa directing the house band.
