Valentine’s Day in Che³mno
January 27, 2011
Article's tools:

The small town of Che³mno near Toruñ and Bydgoszcz in northern Poland is sometimes called a City of Love, owing to the relics of St. Valentine which have been kept in the town for several centuries.

A decade ago, Che³mno started celebrating Valentine’s Day in a special way. The local parish church displays the relics throughout the day and in the evening locals arrange a huge, burning heart of lampoons on the market square. The town also hosts Valentine’s Day games and contests, concerts, a special fair and even culinary workshops called “Alchemy and Cupids in the Kitchen.”

Local bakers and confectioners Feb. 14 give a special meaning to the saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Their Valentine’s buns with lovage and heart-shaped sweets are hard to resist not only for those in love.
