The Boys Are Back in Town
January 27, 2011
Article's tools:

Fast forward to Feb. 7 and Warsaw’s Stodoła Club is set to resound to the greatest hits of Irish rockers Thin Lizzy—“Whiskey in the Jar,” “Jailbreak” and “The Boys are Back in Town.” American band The Supersuckers will be the support act. Thin Lizzy was formed in Dublin in 1969 by singer, songwriter and bass player Phil Lynott and drummer Brian Downey. The charismatic Lynott naturally became the group’s frontman. Thin Lizzy derived their inspiration from Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmi Hendrix and Irish literature.

The upshot of all this was that the group came to draw on elements of hard rock, country, psychedelic rock, and Irish folk music. What made Thin Lizzy stand out was their deployment of two lead guitarists. This formation was later taken up by the likes of Def Leppard, Motorhead and Iron Maiden. This last group acknowledges Thin Lizzy as one of their greatest influences.

Thin Lizzy took a sabbatical after the release of Thunder And Lighting in 1983. The band reformed for the Self Aid concert in 1986 with the conspicuous absence of Phil Lynott, who died in 1986. Bob Geldof and Gary Moore manned the mike during the performance.

The Thin Lizzy lineup we’re going to see at the Stodoła will be Scott Gorham (guitar), Brian Downey (drums), and Darren Wharton (keyboards), together with Viv Campbell (Def Leppard), bass guitarist Marco Mendoza (Whitesnake, Ted Nugent), and singer and guitarist Ricky Warwick (The Almighty).

Thin Lizzy will also be putting out a series of special edition reissues of all their classic albums over the next 18 months. M.B.
