Playing With Tango

Gotan Project are making their way back to Poland once more to play Warsaw’s Kongresowa Hall on Feb. 22. The French trio fuses Argentinian tango with elements of dub, jazz and electronic music.

Argentinian tango guitarist Eduardo Makaroff formed the group in Paris in 1999 with French producer, keyboard player and composer Philippe Cohen Solal, whose credits include the soundtrack to Lars von Trier’s 1991 film Europa (released as Zentropa in North America). Swiss keyboard player and Solal collaborator Christoph H. Muller came on board later. Gotan Project’s first album, La Revancha del Tango, was released in 2001. The album featured contemporary arrangements of tango standards in addition to original compositions and was one of the most impressive debuts of the year.

Gotan Project bridge musical traditions, cultures and generations. Beats and samples can be heard amid the more familiar sounds of the bandoneon, piano and violin. Their music has been described as an extraordinary infusion of the clinical soundscapes of electronic music with the ambiance of the thronging cafes of Argentina.

Their current concert tour was launched to promote their most recent album Tango 3.0, which came out in April last year.
