Boltanski Seeks Polish Heartbeat
February 25, 2011
Article's tools:

Christian Boltanski, one of France’s most important contemporary artists and one of the world’s greatest living artists, has been busy at the Center of Contemporary Art in Warsaw since Feb. 8. Boltanski is adding the heartbeats of Warsaw residents to his The Heart Archive project.

The artist has been inviting visitors to galleries all over the world to record their heartbeats since 2005 and his sound library keeps on getting bigger. He has so far taken his project to galleries in Paris, London, Stockholm, Milan and elsewhere.

Three copies are made of each recording. One is sent to Teshima in the Sea of Japan, where the artist is building a collection of heart rhythms. There are already more than 30,000 recordings. Another copy will remain in the archives of Warsaw’s Center for Contemporary Art. The third copy will be available to visitors on CD.
