Pop Gets Gregorian Treatment

Gregorian, one of the world’s best loved choral ensembles, is making another trip to Poland to perform their unique choral arrangements of pop hits at Warsaw’s Kongresowa Hall March 16.

Gregorian has been going since the early 1990s when music producer Frank Peterson hit on the idea of combining the seemingly incongruous genres of popular music and Gregorian chant.

The group’s first record came out in 1991 but it was the 2000 release Masters of Chant that rocketed them to fame. The record went gold in six European countries and platinum in Portugal. Masters of Chant – Chapter II was recorded a year later and has repeated the success of its predecessor in the 19 countries in which it has been released.

Gregorian have so far released seven albums in their Masters of Chant series, the most recent dating from 2009. They have sold a total of more than 4 million records and have gone beyond Europe to conquer the record stores of Japan, Singapore, South Africa and the U.S.

Their repertoire comprises both chart hits and rock classics. Dire Straits, Duran Duran, Metallica, Lionel Richie, R.E.M., Phil Collins, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, HIM, Depeche Mode, Toto, Elton John, the Bee Gees, Robbie Williams, U2, David Bowie and Lenny Kravitz are just some of the popular artists whose work has been given the Gregorian treatment.
