The Stodoła Club is holding its annual Bill Haley rock’n’roll dance competition March 7. If that sounds like you then e-mail the Stodoła Club at stodola@stodola.pl or fax them at (22) 825-86-25.

The competition was the brainchild of Stodoła Club members Adam Halber and Kazimierz Chendyński and was first held on Feb. 24, 1981, 15 days after the death of rock’n’roll icon Bill Haley. That year, 22 couples jitterbugged, mash potatoed and twisted it out in front of a jury comprising—in addition to Halber and Chendyński—media personalities Bożena Walter, Dariusz Michalski and Marek Gaszyński. The competition has since gone on to become an annual Stodoła institution.

The rules are straightforward enough. You have to hit the floor with some real deal rock’n’roll dancing and keep it up for a full hour. The winning couple will take home the Bill Haley Cup and several non-cash prizes. The competition is limited to a maximum of 50 couples.

A detailed list of rules and regs is available at the Stodoła Club. There will be a rock’n’roll party afterwards featuring DJ Kuczijo. Kuczijo is an avid admirer of the American way of life and loves American music, culture, cars and firearms. He organizes and runs parties and concerts with American themes dating from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Bill Haley and his band The Comets dominated the charts in the mid-1950s with such hits as “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” “See You Later Alligator” and “Rock Around the Clock”. Haley was a key influence in popularizing the then new genre of rock’n’roll.
