The Salt Enchanted in Everyday Life exhibition at the Museum of Wola in Warsaw shows that even a salt cellar can be a sophisticated work of art.

This is the first public presentation of a unique collection of silver and plated salt cellars from the 18th and 19th centuries. Most were made in Poland, but some come from Germany, France, Sweden, Japan and China.

Today salt cellars are plain, mass produced objects, but in the 19th century they were little works of art. Adorned with lavish floral and animal motifs, they were given sophisticated shapes such as seashells, ships and Chinese pagodas. The exhibition provides an insight into the artistry and craftsmanship that went into these items.

Many of the salt cellars shown at the exhibition were manufactured at the workshops of well-known craftsmen such as Karol Malcz and Józef Fraget and the famous Henniger & Comp. Most items come from the private collection of Andrzej Kulesza.

Visitors to the exhibition can also see pieces of rock salt and paintings and photographs by Mirosław Malec and Tomasz Steindel which depict salt mines with salt crystals, stalactites, columns and other cave formations. There is also a halite crystal with a bark beetle trapped inside.
