Kawałek lata (A Piece of Summer), a Polish documentary directed by Marta Minorowicz, has won the main prize at the 33rd Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand in France.

Minorowicz collected the award in person. Kawałek lata was the only Polish entry in the main competition of the Clermont-Ferrand festival, which has for three decades been regarded as the most important overview of short films. Earlier, Kawałek lata won the Short Documentary Golden Dove prize at a film festival in Leipzig.

Kawałek lata tells the story of a grandfather and a grandson who, surrounded by the wilderness of the Bieszczady Mountains, are trying to reconnect with each other. The camera follows the two characters and their relations as they struggle through the beautiful but harsh world around them.

The documentary was produced as part of the First Documentary program at the Andrzej Munk Studio of the Polish Filmmakers Association.

Minorowicz graduated from theater studies and English studies at the Jagiellonian University and also studied at the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing. For over five years, she produced special reports on social problems for the TVN television station. She also wrote and directed a documentary for the Discovery Historia channel. Entitled Anioł ¶mierci (Angel of Death), it recounted the infamous quasi-medical experiments performed by Josef Mengele.
