What’s on at the National Museum

Warsaw’s National Museum has prepared a wide range of events to mark the final weekend of the exhibition We Want To Be Modern, April 15-17.

The exhibition explores the significance of objects of everyday use in shaping modern Polish identity. It comprises around 180 items produced in the 13 years after 1955, when a political thaw following the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin prompted artists in this part of the world to embrace modernism.

April 15
A conference about the 1950s and 1960s in Poland, with a special focus on esthetics and visions of modernity.
From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Polish jazz music from the ‘50s and ‘60s.
Introduction by Ryszard Borowski and Piotr Rodowicz. 7 p.m.
Poster Museum
Opening of an exhibition dedicated to theater posters from the collections of the Dramatyczny Theater in Warsaw and the Poster Museum in Warsaw’s Wilanów district, branch of the National Museum.

April 16
Marathon film screening at the National Museum, 1 p.m.
Selection of documentaries illustrating life in Poland under communism in a humorous way. The series has been produced by the Discovery World television channel.
The National Museum in Warsaw is auctioning office furniture from the ‘50s and ‘60s that has undergone renovation. Proceeds will go to the National Museum’s Center for Contemporary Design.
Posters from the collection of the Dramatyczny Theater will also be auctioned in aid of the Retirement Home for Actors in Skolimów near Warsaw.
The host of the auction is Andrzej Starmach from the Starmach Gallery in Cracow. 6 p.m.
Night at the Museum
Chance to see the exhibition until 1 a.m. Guided tours.

April 17
Vintage Car Rally11 a.m.-6 p.m. Organized together with the Automobile Club Poland.
There will also be a lecture about the motor industry in the ‘50s and ‘60s—4 p.m.
Two documentaries about the Polish motor industry under communism.
