Monodrama About Bulgakov
March 31, 2011
Article's tools:

The Roma Music Theater March 11 premiered a new production entitled Morfina (Morphine). The show is a musical monodrama about the third wife of Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov, the author of the famous novel The Master and Margarita.

Yelena Bulgakova, played by Anna Czartoryska, was Bulgakov’s third and last wife and at the same time his muse. The show at the Roma theater, directed by Waldemar Raźniak, consists of excerpts from Yelena’s diaries and letters Bulgakov wrote to her.

Morfina recounts the last years of Bulgakov’s life from the private perspective of his wife. The story is illustrated and commented on by songs written by popular Polish poets and lyricists Agnieszka Osiecka, Jonasz Kofta and Marek Grechuta.

The production features music performed live by a quartet directed by Andrzej Perkman. The visual side of the show benefits from the contribution of set designer Paulina Czernek, costume and makeup artist Natalia Jaroszewska, and choreographer Paulina Andrzejewska.
