Bringing Two Cities Together

The Long Time No See, Between £ód¼ and Warsaw exhibition at the Andel’s Hotel in £ód¼ was the first part of a larger project called Andel’s Quarter. Marta Ko³akowska, who organized the exhibition, has described the project as an attempt at bringing £ód¼ and Warsaw closer together. Although the distance from Warsaw to £ód¼ is just a little more than 100 kilometers, the two cities are distant from each other in terms of urban development and the attitudes of their inhabitants.

For an exhibition of contemporary art, Long Time No See seemed unusually understated and refined, steering clear of the in-your-face explicitness that characterizes contemporary conceptual art. The exhibition only comprised videos, shown on five large screens in the hotel lobby. The five videos dominated the lobby and lent a whole new character to it. They were produced by graduates of the Fine Arts Academy in £ód¼, including Anna Orlikowska, Wiktor Polak and Jerzy Zachara from £ód¼ and Maciek Stźpiński and Iwo Rutkiewicz from Warsaw.

The exhibition was on display until April 22 and the second part of the project is scheduled to open in early autumn. It will be shown in the lobby as well.

The Andel’s Hotel is part of the Manufaktura shopping mall in £ód¼, one the largest malls in Poland and Central Europe. Manufaktura was built on the site of the former factory of Izrael Poznański, a 19th-century industrial tycoon. Thoroughly renovated and redeveloped, the premises preserve the traditional ambiance of the site.
