Corporate sentiment in January mixed

Moods improved in select business sectors in January after deteriorating across the board in December, with construction, manufacturing and select services reporting better sentiment, but with moods further declining for retail, a report from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) showed.
Moods in manufacturing rebounded in January, but remained in the negative territory, with the sentiment indicator for the sector increasing to -9 from -14 points in December.
In construction, moods are slightly less pessimistic than in December, with the general index improving to -33 points in January from -35 points a month before (with 7% of enterprises reporting an improvement and 40% reporting a deterioration of sentiment.
Sentiment in the retail sector deteriorated in January both vis-a-vis the prior month and against each January of the past eight years, GUS said. Sentiment indicator fell to -17 pts from -13 in December.
In services, financial and IT services firms continued to view the situation optimistically although financial and insurance firms are less optimistic than a month ago.
