A concert by the Tord Gustavsen Ensemble will kick off the 17th Jazz in the Old Town International Open-Air Festival in Warsaw’s Old Town market square July 2.

The event, organized by the Jazz Art Foundation—and held under the auspices of Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz and Culture and National Heritage Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski—is one of the biggest and most popular jazz festivals in Poland.

Since it was launched in the mid-1990s, the festival has drawn an impressive crowd of half a million listeners of all ages. Concerts are held each Saturday in July and August, drawing up to 4,000 music fans—a total of 40,000 or so throughout the season.

The festival features a variety of jazz styles and a plethora of international stars. Over the years, these have included the likes of Scott Hamilton, Duffy Jackson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Archie Sheep, David Murray, Tony Lakatos, Bill Evans, and Marilyn Mazur—alongside “the discoveries of the American jazz scene” such as the Quincy Jones Presents Alfredo Rodriguez Trio and the Princess of Jazz Grace Kelly Quintet. A large number of outstanding Polish jazz musicians, including Tomasz Stańko, Michał Urbaniak, Zbigniew Namysłowski, and Leszek Możdżer, have also performed during the festival.

The Norwegian musician Tord Gustavsen, who will open this year’s event along with his ensemble, is one of the most creative and innovative pianists on the Scandinavian jazz scene. The Jazz in the Old Town festival is part of a series of events marking Warsaw’s bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2016.
