Disappoint of View
September 2, 2011
Article's tools:

A point of view from which everything looks disappointing is the theme of Disappoint of View, an exhibition of the latest collages by Wrocław-based artist Kama Sokolnicka.

Her subtle, monochromatic works on paper seem to show this disappointment in action, while maintaining a humorous distance. The artist uses photographs, cutting them and tearing into pieces carelessly, turning the images into narrow strips presenting fragments of the original whole. The motifs of frames, curtains and peepholes, appearing in all works by Sokolnicka, generate a feeling of incompleteness and force viewers to produce their own stories.

The anxiety present in the collages is reflected in a series of paintings on show in the exhibition. Cubic Structures consists of images of buildings and structures painted on plywood, illuminated by light of unknown origin, or decomposed in an upsetting way. Paintings from the Gloom With a View series, prepared specially for the exhibition, refer to suspense and Freud’s concept of the subconscious. They bring to mind Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window or Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up, presenting fragments of neutral suburban architecture, suggesting mystery and hidden crime.
