Dance Through the Ages

Between Sept. 17 and Oct. 2, Warsaw will host the 10th Body/Mind International Dance Festival. History is the leading theme of this year’s festival, which, according to the organizers, will focus on the development of dance arts throughout the ages. The world’s leading dancers, coming from Europe, the United States and Latin America, will bring together a variety of artistic traditions and ideas.

Showcased techniques will include expressionist dance, hailed by many critics as “bringing the deepest of existential experiences to the stage.” Mary Wigman, the creator of the genre and an icon of early 20th century German culture, will be the subject of A Mary Wigman Dance Evening, brought to Warsaw audiences by Ecuadorian choreographer Fabian Barba. Other performances will guide the spectator into the world of early African dances and their role in the life of prehistoric peoples. A show focusing on the works of Germany’s Wuppertal Tanztheater is likely to be another highlight. This innovative dance theater group was led by the late German choreographer Pina Bausch, the subject of a new film by Wim Wenders, director of Buena Vista Social Club. Janusz Subicz, a member of the Wuppertal Tanztheater, will also lead a series of dance workshops open to the public.

Festival venues include Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater, the Studio Theater, the Warsaw State Theater Academy, and the city’s Center for Contemporary Art. Tickets can be booked at individual venues and cost from zl.20 to 50.
