Most people are familiar with the works of Frederic Chopin through pianists who interpret the music in many different ways. How about a CD packed with Chopin’s works played on the violin? That’s exactly what Jolanta Stopka, a Polish violinist born in Kłodzko, has recorded.

“I came up with the idea of recording a different version of Chopin’s music,” Stopka says. “After all, many great violinists, such as Pablo Sarasate, Fritz Kreisler and Karol Lipiński, performed transcriptions of pieces by Chopin in concert. I took up the challenge together with pianist Magdalena Blum. I decided to record the transcriptions I liked best. I have played the pieces at many concerts in Poland and abroad and they have been received with much interest everywhere.”

“The CD with transcriptions of music by Chopin highlights the violinist’s lyrical talent and her top-notch technique. The recordings can be described as truly creative.”—Prof. T. Tomaszewski, a professor at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and the concert master of the Deutsche Oper

Jolanta Stopka, a graduate of the Academy of Music in Poznań, also studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. She is one of the most fascinating musicians of her generation. Her technique stands out with its remarkably beautiful sound, musical sensitivity and interesting interpretative approaches. In 2009, Stopka won the Best Musical Award from the Belgian government. Her musical collaborations have included work with Hermann Krebbers, Wolfgang Marschner, Eduard Schmieder, Stanley Dods and Valery Oistrakh.

In December 2009, Stopka teamed up with pianist Magdalena Blum to record violin and piano transcriptions of pieces by Chopin for the Acte Prealable music label. The album has been out for several months. Her next project was a video based on a work entitled Sostenuto. Hommage a Chopin which Jarek Kordaczuk wrote specially for Stopka. The video was a Croatian-Polish co-production shot by Zvonimir Ferina and Mario Topic. Stopka has most recently worked on a 30-minute piece for violin and chamber orchestra, inspired by French chanson. The project combines movie score music with improvisation.

Stopka pursues interests in many different music genres ranging from classical music to jazz and popular music.
