Dr. Michael Story, a U.S. oncology professor at the University of Texas in Dallas, chats to Jolanta Wolska.

What brings you to Warsaw?
I came to a scientific and medical conference held at the Kongresowa Hall.

What were your expectations of Warsaw?
As I had been to Moscow, I expected to see more of the Soviet-style architecture in Warsaw. The Palace of Culture and Science is very impressive inside, especially considering when it was built. But the external appearance is, I must say, less than inspiring.

So what’s different about Warsaw?
Most European cities have the same features, such as an old town, a market square, malls, etc., and Warsaw is no different in that respect. But Warsaw was destroyed during the war and then found itself in the Soviet bloc, which in my mind was a hindrance to the reconstruction of classic European architecture.

I also hadn’t realized that Poland’s population was so large, 38 million people.

I love Polish traditional cuisine. The food and service was fantastic at every restaurant we went to in Warsaw. And the hotels are very good also.

Is there anything that fascinates you about Warsaw?
I loved wondering around the Old Town. The benches with the Chopin story all around the Old Town are a great idea. You can download the Chopin story to your phone. Polish history is very interesting and romantic. So this place has the best of Polish and European culture, while also unfortunately the sad side of human suffering and tragedy, as can be noticed through the many monuments all over the city, paying respect to both Polish and Jewish victims of the war.
