The city of Kielce, 200 km south of Warsaw, is preparing to host the NURT Festival of Documentary Films for the 17th time Nov. 21-25. Several dozen films that qualified for the festival will be competing for the Golden Nurt statuette and a top prize of zl.9,000 donated by the state television broadcaster TVP.

One of the special sections of this year’s festival will be “Faces of the Beast” featuring films about dictators, political criminals, and leaders with delusions of grandeur. As part of the series festival goers will see, for example, The Unburied Man, a film about Imre Nagy, the prime minister of Hungary during the anti-Soviet revolution in 1956. The director, Márta Mészáros will meet with the audience. The festival will also host Polish director Lech Majewski, who will take part in a discussion about his latest film The Mill and the Cross, a documentary revolving around the famous painting of that title by Peter Bruegel.

The festival is organized by the Kielce Culture Center.
