Twenty years after Metro, the first Polish musical, opened in Warsaw, the team behind the show are working on a hi-tech musical called Pola Negri, the first 3D spectacular of its kind in the world.

The new show will be based on the life of Polish actress Pola Negri, who had a spectacular career as a star of German and American silent movies in the 1920s and 1930s. The title role will be played by popular actress Natasza Urbańska.

The new multimedia production will combine 3D technology with live performances. A screen at the rear of the stage will show images in 3D depicting New York, Berlin, Warsaw and Los Angeles, scenes from a sultan’s harem and a Hollywood revue.

“Using stereoscopic images, we will create a virtual set design and virtual actors,” said Janusz Józefowicz, who directs the show. “We are the first in the world to do something like this.”

Images will be contributed by the Platige Image studio, headed by Tomasz Bagiński, a 2003 Academy Award nominee for the animated short entitled Cathedral.

Pola Negri will have its premiere at the Camerimage International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography in Bydgoszcz and then arrive in Warsaw Dec. 31. “We would like to combine the Warsaw premiere with a 1920s/30s-themed New Year’s Eve party,” said Józefowicz.
