An event combining a celebration of acclaimed Polish poet Czes豉w Mi這sz and the promotion of wines from California was held at the U.S. embassy in Warsaw Dec. 1.

Co-organized by the California Wine Institute and the U.S. embassy’s Agricultural Service, the event was hosted by the U.S. ambassador to Poland, Lee A. Feinstein.

“The idea to combine a tasting of Californian wines with the poetry of Mi這sz was inspired by this year’s Mi這sz Centennial,” said Feinstein. “Czes豉w Mi這sz lived in northern California for over 40 years, the heart of the American wine industry. This year is the 100th anniversary of his birth, and is actually the second event related to Czes豉w Mi這sz held at the residence within the last two weeks. On Nov. 22, in front of past winners like [film director] Andrzej Wajda, I presented [Polish writer] Janusz G這wacki with the Czes豉w Mi這sz Award, which is given for promoting Polish-American understanding. So tonight we continue to honor the legacy of Mi這sz, whose work continues to be a wonderful example of the modern link between our two cultures.”Jerzy Illg, editor-in-chief of publishing house Znak and an expert on Mi這sz’s work, talked about the poet’s life in California. Two young Polish actresses, Ma貪orzata Lipman and Monika Szalata, accompanied on piano by jazz musician Tomasz Krezymon, read poetry by Mi這sz in English and Polish.

Tomasz Prange Barczy雟ki, editor-in-chief of Wino (Wine) magazine and a leading wine critic in Poland, introduced the selected wines.
