A zl.450 million car window plant being built by Pilkington Automotive Poland at Chmielów near the southeastern city of Sandomierz was the largest foreign investment project in Poland in 2011, said the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ). The agency, which provides services to foreign companies investing in Poland, handed out awards to top investors in this country in 2011 at a ceremony held at Warsaw’s Polonia Palace Hotel Dec. 12.

The Pilkington Automotive Poland plant is under construction within the Tarnobrzeg Special Economic Zone, 30 kilometers south of the company’s first manufacturing site in Sandomierz. The total cost of the project is estimated at around zl.450 million. Some of the money will be provided by Poland’s Economy Ministry in the form of a subsidy. Around 500 workers are expected to find employment in the plant, while another 150 jobs will be created by Pilkington Automotive Poland’s business partners.

“Growing demand for high-quality products for the automotive market is what drives our constant expansion and decisions to start new investment projects,” said Ryszard Jania, president of Pilkington Automotive Poland. “The plant in Chmielów will produce 7 million windows for passenger cars and delivery vans annually, which will double the company’s total output in Poland.”

Windows from Chmielów will be delivered to international automakers including General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen and Fiat.

The Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency has been giving out annual awards to companies carrying out investment projects of special importance to the Polish economy since 2007. The awards are in three categories: the largest project in terms of value, the project with the largest number of jobs, and the top new-technology project.

Pilkington Automotive Poland has been active in Poland since 1997. It has 1,400 staff in five plants, with over 1,000 workers employed in its Sandomierz plant. The company says it plans more projects in this country.
