Dr. Daniel Andruczyk, a Polish-Australian plasma and fusion physicist working in the United States, chats with Jolanta Wolska.

What brings you to Warsaw this time?
I have come here with the director of the Center for Plasma Material Interaction at UIUC to negotiate a possible research project with Heuttinger, whose main research and manufacturing divisions are in Warsaw.

You were here two years ago. What changes have you noticed?
There have been massive changes, particularly in infrastructure. The main train stations between Berlin and Warsaw have been cleaned up and the trains upgraded. There is a huge amount of new construction and renovation going on.

Have you enjoyed Warsaw more this time?
It has been a great reunion! People ask me where I’d like to live in Europe, and my no. 1 is always Warsaw, then Prague in the Czech Republic and then Manchester in Britain.

What do you think of Poles’ attitude to sport?
Poles in general love their sport and Polish fans support their clubs with a passion. But there is at lack of free public areas to play sport in Poland. This is something that other countries have and I think that needs more investment here.

Will you be coming here for the Euro 2012 championships?
No, I won’t be coming. My sport of choice is Rugby League (13-man rugby), which one day I would love to see popular in Warsaw and Poland.

You had fun in Wilanów and Łazienki Park.
Yes, but I didn’t see the squirrels nor the peacocks this time. Wilanów is an example of the Polish spirit, how people here are able to reinvent themselves and also bring back the splendor of the old days. It was great to see the renovated palace and beautiful gardens in Wilanów. Of course, Łazienki Park is always my favorite.
