A flood is always a misfortune, especially when it gets out of control. With the multitude of opportunities offered by electronics, we are being flooded by information. If left uncontrolled, this deluge of data will hardly make us happy. But it can be kept under control.

What do the upcoming Euro 2012 soccer championships in Poland and Ukraine have in common with the human digestive tract and copyright protection? The multitude of data involved. This data can be gathered in various ways and put to good use—if the right method is found to analyze it. In the case of soccer matches, this involves ensuring security for fans, while analyses of digestive tract data are irreplaceable in diagnostics. It is also possible to analyze text to determine if a piece of writing has been not created in breach of copyright.

“These are just a few of the many possible applications of KASKADA, a universal platform for the processing of multimedia data streams,” says Prof. Henryk Krawczyk, rector of the Gdańsk University of Technology. He manages the Mayday Euro 2012 project financed by Poland’s National Center for Research and Development using European Union funds. The project, whose budget exceeds zl.16 million, is nearing completion; work on it will continue until the end of this year and KASKADA is the main focus of the project. According to Krawczyk, KASKADA—the Polish acronym stands for Context Analysis of Data Streams from Cameras for Alert-Defining Applications—has a good chance of becoming a commercial success and being used to provide services at home and abroad.

As The Polish Science Voice continues to patrol regions on the border of science, modern technology and business, KASKADA is one of many projects that testify to the increasingly intensive ties among these spheres of human endeavor. One of the main institutions playing the role of an accelerator in this area is the National Center for Research and Development, whose aims and activities have been extensively reported in The Polish Science Voice.
