Poland has an important role to play in the process of economic integration between East and West, say the organizers of the Baltic Business Forum. The fourth forum starts April 25 in the northwestern Polish coastal town of 安inouj軼ie and the neighboring German town of Heringsdorf.

“It is in Poland’s interests to show our partners in the North and West that the best way to the East—to setting up shop and getting involved in business there—is via Poland,” says Jacek Piechota, president of the Baltic Business Forum Association and a former economy minister. “We have every asset needed to play the role of go-between. We understand exactly the different business cultures of the West and East and are familiar with the challenges emerging with free-market and democratic changes. This makes us valuable experts on Eastern markets for the West,” he adds.

Every year the Baltic Business Forum attracts scores of businessmen, politicians and experts from Western and Northern Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

They meet in 安inouj軼ie and Heringsdorf to discuss supranational economic strategies and to establish business relations. This year, participants will have an opportunity to use the International Cooperation Exchange, a web-based application which will enable them to learn about each other and describe their business operations even before coming to the forum. “Every company taking part in the forum will have its own virtual diary. The application will enable people to propose a meeting to a potential business partner. And if the partner already has an appointment on the chosen date, the system will compare the two diaries and propose another date and hour convenient to both parties,” says ㄆkasz Bia貫k, director of the Baltic Business Forum Management Board office.

Apart from unofficial meetings, the Baltic Business Forum will also feature plenary sessions, at which invited experts will discuss conditions for and barriers to the movement of goods, services and capital between East and West. There will be panel discussions on the energy sector, logistics, banking, telecommunications, information technology, environmental protection and the media. The participants will discuss economic strategies for the Baltic region. The inflow of Chinese capital may create new prospects for the region, something which the organizers want to emphasize strongly. The forum will open with a session entitled The Baltic–Poland–China.

All the debates will be held at the modern Interferie Medical Spa congress center in 安inouj軼ie. The Baltic Business Forum Association, the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, the chairman of West Pomerania province and the mayor of 安inouj軼ie are the forum’s organizers. It will be held under the auspices of the economy ministry.
